At The Biofab Fair by Biofabricate during London Design Festival, Polybion presented a collaboration with Someone Somewhere, a Mexican social enterprise that connects ancestral craft with modern design to create lasting social and environmental impact.

Together, we designed a bag that brings biotechnology and craftsmanship into dialogue, merging innovation, tradition, and human connection.

A Collaboration Rooted in Purpose

Someone Somewhere has worked for nearly a decade to lift thousands of Mexican artisans out of poverty through fair employment and purpose-driven design. Eighty-five percent of their collaborators are women, and the company is both B Corp and Climate Neutral Certified, reinforcing their commitment to transparency and responsibility.

The bag combines three techniques that represent different ways of creating. The upper section, made with Celium™ in a baby blue tone, reflects the aesthetics of bacterial growth and design. The lower section, made from CircuLoom, Someone Somewhere’s textile innovation created entirely from recycled threads and woven on a pedal loom, showcases resourcefulness and cultural continuity. Its strap, hand-knotted in macramé, embodies patience and the artistry of human touch.

Inside, a label signed by Nieves, an artisan from Puebla, connects the user to her story through a QR code, a hallmark of transparency that defines Someone Somewhere’s work.

A Shared Belief in Meaningful Innovation

For Someone Somewhere, sustainability begins with people. For Polybion, it begins with the way we create materials. This collaboration unites both visions, showing that progress is possible when science and craftsmanship grow together, when innovation uplifts both people and the planet.
